The Human Need for Connection
Regardless of who we are, where we come from, or where life takes us, there is something that connects us all: the desire to belong.
Human beings are inherently social creatures. Our need for community and connection is deeply rooted in our biology, shaped by millions of years of evolution. In fact, the social brain hypothesis suggests that the human neocortex, the region responsible for many of our higher cognitive functions, evolved in part to help us navigate increasingly complex social relationships and communities.
Our relationships influence far more than our emotional well-being. Positive social interactions engage neurological systems associated with trust, pleasure, and emotional regulation, while prolonged social isolation can contribute to heightened stress and adverse health outcomes.
All of this to say, the desire to feel welcomed, accepted, understood, and represented is profoundly human. We believe that everyone deserves to experience that sense of belonging, and that belief extends into every corner of our business, from the relationships we build with our professionals to the experiences we create through education, events, and community.
It's also what inspired us to have this conversation today.
A Beautifully Diverse Industry
The beauty and wellness industries have experienced extraordinary growth over the last several decades, and perhaps one of the most meaningful changes has been the growing recognition of diversity in all its forms.
When we look at the history of beauty, it's impossible to overlook the contributions of cultures and communities around the world. From ancient African skincare traditions and Ayurvedic wellness practices to the influence of Asian beauty rituals and the artistry of Black and LGBTQ+ communities, so much of what we celebrate in modern beauty has been shaped by people whose contributions have not always received the recognition they deserve.
Many of these communities continued to create, innovate, and influence beauty standards even when the industry offered them limited representation or opportunities.
Today, we have the opportunity to honor those contributions by continuing to build an industry that welcomes different perspectives, celebrates individuality, and recognizes that beauty has never belonged to one particular group of people.
And for those of us working in aesthetics and wellness, that responsibility extends well beyond the images we share or the language we use in our marketing.
It extends into the treatment room.
Inclusivity Is Part of Professional Excellence
As beauty professionals, we naturally develop specialties. Some practitioners dedicate their careers to corrective skincare, while others gravitate toward holistic wellness, advanced aesthetics, or particular skin concerns. That depth of knowledge is incredibly valuable, and specialization is an important part of professional growth.
However, regardless of where your expertise lies, having a foundational understanding of the diverse individuals who may seek your care is essential.
Consider the differences in how skin responds to inflammation, for example. Clients with richly pigmented skin may be more susceptible to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation following certain inflammatory skin conditions or procedures. For an esthetician performing chemical peels, microneedling, or other corrective treatments, understanding these considerations can influence everything from treatment selection and technique to preparation and aftercare.
Similarly, recognizing how redness and inflammation present across different skin tones, understanding the needs of mature or hormonally changing skin, and accommodating clients with sensory sensitivities or physical disabilities are all meaningful extensions of inclusive care.
These considerations remind us that a treatment protocol cannot always be approached as a universal experience. Every individual brings their own physiology, history, preferences, and needs into the treatment room.
And while no practitioner can reasonably be expected to know everything, we can all remain curious, continue our education, recognize the limits of our expertise, and make thoughtful referrals when necessary.
Creating a Space Where Everyone Belongs
Inclusivity doesn't necessarily require an elaborate initiative or a complete reinvention of your practice. Often, it begins with the details that shape a client's experience before they ever receive a treatment.
It might mean ensuring that your consultation forms and conversations are welcoming to different identities and family structures. It might mean featuring a wider range of skin tones, ages, and appearances in your treatment imagery, investing in continued education on skin of color, or making your treatment space more accessible to individuals with different physical and sensory needs.
Perhaps most importantly, it means creating an environment where clients feel comfortable expressing their concerns, asking questions, and participating in decisions about their care without fear of judgment.
There is something incredibly meaningful about being welcomed into a space where you feel understood, respected, and genuinely cared for.
And as professionals in an industry so closely connected to confidence, self-expression, and personal well-being, we have a beautiful opportunity to create those experiences every day.
